Most of our recipients are local families on government subsidies
whose food stamp benefits do not suffice for an entire month.
As these food stamps run out by the third week of the month,
Rahima steps in to supplement basic food items such as rice, flour,
grains, pasta, cooking oil, tuna and meat. In order to be fair and
equitable to all our recipients, we purchase the items in bulk and
distribute the same items to all the families.
Currently, Rahima distributes 8-9 tons of food every month to about 350
families most of whom reside in the South Bay Area.
In addition, we are assisting some families in neighboring communities
such as Union City, Hayward, San Lorenzo, Oakland, Concord, Richmond,
Alameda, and San Francisco.
All food items are purchased with donations received by Rahima.
As of April 2004, a partnership between Rahima and Second Harvest Food Bank
has gone into effect. By purchasing through Second Harvest Food Bank,
we were able to increase our average tonnage distributed from 5-6 tons to
8-9 tons per month. This new partnership has also allowed us to incorporate
fresh produce items into our menu such as onions, potatoes and lettuce.
